Frankel extends his unbeaten run to 12 races

  • Frankel has extended his unbeaten run to 12, by taking the Group One Sussex Stakes at Goodwood in style this afternoon (Wednesday 1 August).

The four-year-old, trained by Sir Henry Cecil, was sent off 1-20 favourite against just three opponents. And he won by six lengths.

Frankel’s stablemate and half brother Bullet Train set the pace, before Frankel hit the front a couple of furlongs out. He then cruised to victory under Tom Queally, clinching his seventh Group One and becoming the first horse to win the Sussex Stakes twice.

In second was Goldolphin’s Farhh, while Gabrial was third and Bullet Train was fourth.

“Every moment spent on his back is a special moment and today was no different,” said Tom Queally. “He’s amazing, he had all the other horses cooked just after halfway and it was a nice prep for his next race.

“He’s a class apart from anything else at the moment, he does it all very easily therefore I have a very easy job, all I have to do is steer.”

Unfortunately Sir Henry was not at Goodwood to celebrate the victory as he is undergoing treatment for cancer.

Frankel is now aimed at the Juddmonte International at York on 22 August, a step up in trip to 1m2 ½f.
