One of the most eagerly anticipated equestrian events of the year gets under way this evening, with the first performance of the Diamond Jubilee Pageant at Royal Windsor Horse Show.
But the heavy rain has meant that the public car parks for the horse show had to be closed earlier today – and they will not reopen for tonight’s performance.
A spokesman for the pageant told H&H: “We had a two-hour downpour this afternoon and are trying to preserve the public car parks for the rest of the show, so they will not be open tonight.
“We are encouraging people wherever possible to use public transport. We are 10 minutes from Windsor Central train station and five minutes from Windsor and Eton Riverside train station.
She added: “All of the Windsor town council car parks are open as usual and we have managed to get some additional car parks open. A traffic marshalling system is in place in Windsor, directing visitors to those car parks and onwards to the showground.”
Blue badge holders will be directed to the car park closest to the showground. People who have pre-booked parking will be given a refund at the box office, on production of their car parking ticket.
And everybody in the uncovered seats at tonight’s performance will be given a waterproof poncho.
