Teenager invents system to show how high you are jumping

  • Teenage showjumper Rhianna Jones has come up with an idea that’s so simple, it’s hard to believe no-one has done it before.

As part of her design and technology GCSE, Rhianna invented a magnetic system that fits on to jump wings to show how high you are jumping.

The HowHi Marker gained her an A grade and she has since set up a company to sell the product.

“There is nothing that tells you the height of the jump in the practice rings at British Showjumping (BS) competitions,” said the 16-year-old.

“You are not allowed to jump higher than the class that is going on, but often that is not kept to.”

Show centres are testing the product and say it is “working well”.

With her HowHi system, a vertical metal strip is attached to the jump – and can be painted over – and the other attaches magnetically.

How Hi Markers cost £5 for a pack of eight, up to 1.40m. Imperial labels will be available soon.
