Racehorse trainer Oliver Sherwood’s home was destroyed in a fire last night (Wednesday 23 November).
Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue told H&H a firecrew was called out at 8.13pm. The cottage on Sheepdrove Road in Lambourn, suffered 50% fire damage to the roof and 40% to the ground floor.
Mr Sherwood, his wife, teenage son and daughter and dogs all escaped unhurt. The blaze was brought under control and put out by 1.45am.
“It was probably the most frightening experience I’ve ever had in my life,” Mr Sherwood, who has trained nearly 800 winners in a 25-year career, told At The Races today (Thursday 24 November).
“I was watching football and my daughter went to have a bath. I suddenly heard screams and shouts and I ran upstairs. She said there’s a fire and I couldn’t even see anything. There was a fire at the top of the stairs, underneath the woodwork, the skirting boards and the floor boards.
Fire crews from Newbury, Hungerford and Lambourn as well as those from Oxfordshire and Wiltshire attended the scene.
