Comberton Clancy is Royal International riding horse champion

  • After taking the riding horse championship at Hickstead’s Derby Meeting, it was business as usual for Jayne Webber and Comberton Clancy at the Royal International Horse Show as they again took the tricolour.

“This was the first time for him in the international arena, he had a good look round at first, but then really lowered and focused on his job” said Jayne.

Earlier Jackie Beatham and Carol Bardo’s eight-year-old had stood top of a very strong large riding horse section.

Gaining their second win of this meeting were Claire Heseltine and Funtime Frankie who headed the small line up and stood reserve to Comberton Clancy. The previous day the pair had also headed their amateur class for the second year running.

Also maintaining their winning form were Jo Callwood and Thor who triumphed in their heavyweight working hunter class after jumping the only clear. After standing reserve last year, Cheshire-based Jo Callwood and Thor took the tricolour this time, with the second placed heavyweight Louise Bell and Get Smart standing reserve.

After three M&M classes, Sarah Challinor and the prolific winning Pumphill Buckthorn took the M&M WHP title. The Dartmoor fairly skipped round the course full of natural fences and greenery to win his 122cm class en-route to the championship.

“We are saving him especially for the working hunter classes, and he was spot one everywhere,” said Sarah.

Standing reserve was Acton Humbug who won the final over 138cm class for Zoe Love.

After over four hours of M&M classes on the river lawn, Aimee Hoare and Kilmannan Kilty took the tricolour. Aimee has been riding Claire Dawson’s black Dales gelding for four seasons, and this is his first open season.

The mini title went to Anya Potter-Firth riding Heniarth Dilyscious who won a strong lead rein class, with the reserve going to Horninglow Derwent who won the first ridden class for Gemma Pallet.

Camilla Davies and Standing Ovation franked their amateur hunter form here at Hickstead. After taking the amateur hunter championship at Windsor, the pair added another amateur title to their laurels.
