Trainer Richard Phillips was among six “unsung heroes” celebrated at the Pride of Racing awards last week (14 July).
The six, out of 12 shortlisted from 114 nominations, received their awards at a ceremony attended by Princess Anne at Epsom racecourse.
Racing Welfare officer Paul Lodge, who helped those affected by the Malton fire that killed young jockeys Jamie Kyne and Jan Wilson (news, 10 September 2009), was also recognised.
Others who were honoured included Newmarket training grounds manager John Taylor, Newmarket racecourse stable manager Joyce Wallsgrove and Frank Conlon — instructor at the British Racing School and former head lad to Sir Henry Cecil and Sir Michael Stoute.
Pontefract’s head groundsman and the stable lads’ canteen manager Ron and Joan Senior, who have worked at the racecourse for 50 years were also given an award.
Eighty-two-year-old breeder Gordon Giddings was honoured with a “Lifetime in Racing” award.
