A new cross-country race with a prize of €1,000 (£852) to the winner has been announced by the Ward Union hunt.
The inaugural Antler Challenge will take place on Saturday 19 March.
Entries are €100 (£85) and close on Thursday 10 March.
“The format will be that of an old fashioned point-to-point. It will be run over three miles of natural country — mainly hedges and ditches — for experienced hunters and riders,” said organiser David Geraghty.
The ride will take place at The Dancing Tree, Rodanstown, Kilcock, Co Meath, and is open to all who can carry a minimum of 11st 7lbs (including tack).
“The land will give us a good galloping track and allows fences up to one hundred yards wide so you can pick your own line — true Ward Union hunt country,” added Mr Geraghty.
“We have had a great response from all over the country, and there seems to be a huge appetite for an event like this since growth of the Golden Button in the UK. We hope some enthusiasts might cross the pond — if they’re brave enough!”
