Western Point-to-Point search for missing trophy

  • Organisers of a Cornish point-to-point are searching for a missing trophy.

Western Point-to-Point is appealing for information as to the whereabouts of its Berryman Cup — which hasn’t been seen since 2005.

The silver-plated cup carries the engraving “Western Point-to-Point”.

“The trophy was last recorded as being awarded in 2005,” said secretary Linda Matthews.

“It was presented to the winners of an open maiden race, which is usually split into two sections. But that year there were three sections to share the cup and the third-placed winners were not recorded.”

She added that the cup would cost around £100 to replace.

“The other winners say they gave it back and we have no reason to dispute this. Or perhaps the trophy was handed out after the wrong race, we just don’t know. There will be no reprimand and calls will be in confidence — we just want it back,” added Ms Matthews.

Earlier this season, the Western’s Bolitho Cup, which had been missing for four years, was returned after an appeal was posted on the Point-to-Point Authority’s website.

The cup was recovered at the Devon home of a trainer who did not realise it belonged to the Western.
