Point-to-point jockeys in East Anglia are trying to raise as much money as possible in the build up to a sponsored leg wax in aid of The Injured Jockeys Fund (IJF).
When racing finishes at the Fitzwilliam Meeting in Cottenham on Sunday 14 March, spectators will be treated to a different sort of entertainment as ten of the male jockeys take part in the leg-waxing spectacle.
“We’re hoping to raise at least £1,000 for IJF,” organiser Becky Williams told H&H.
“My husband, Tony, broke his leg badly last year, and the support from the Injured Jockey’s Fund was invaluable. We want to do something to thank them.”
The IJF, which provides practical, emotional and financial help to injured jockeys, has helped several other East Anglian jockeys that were injured last year, including Rosie Chinery, Matthew Mackley, Alex Vaughan Jones and Johnny Bailey.
“The charity is very important in the racing community and so we are hoping to get lots of sponsorship in,” continued Mrs. Williams. “As an added incentive, the jockeys who raise the least amount of sponsorship will get a bit more than they bargained for!”
Dickie Collinson, a jockey taking part in the leg-waxing, which is being carried out free of charge by girls from the Escape Hair & Beauty salon, was apprehensive about the event.
“I’m just pleading with everyone that I’m a big girl’s blouse and can’t handle much pain to try and get as much sponsorship as I can!”
