Scottish Horse Show celebrates its 50th anniversary

  • The Scottish Horse Show celebrates its 50th anniversary this year — having started in 1960 as a riding club’s summer fixture.

This show — which has more Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) qualifiers than any other one-day show in Great Britain — takes place at the Border Union Showground, Kelso, on Saturday, 14 August.

Special commemorative rosettes and mementos for exhibitors, competitors and VIP guests will mark the jubilee.

The organisers of the Scottish Horse Show are also planning a celebratory golden anniversary luncheon on the day of the event and hope as many former committee members, exhibitors and supporters as possible from the early days will attend.

“The Scottish Horse Show is one not to miss,” said Colin Tibbey, who last year qualified the Welsh section A Pinewell Bucks Fizz at Kelso and went on to lift the prestigious Cuddy in-hand trophy for the second time at the Horse of the Year Show the following October.

“We’ve been going for the past eight seasons or so and it’s always well attended; the standard is top-class. It’s a good five- to six-hour journey for us from north Wales, but we would never miss it.”

The Scottish Horse Show began life as the Edinburgh and District Riding Club’s summer event, developing into an important summer fixture with showing, driving and showjumping.

It is now a Mecca for the showing world, boasting 110 classes in nine rings and attracting 1,100 entries.

This year’s HOYS qualifiers include hunters, working hunters, hacks, cobs, riding horses, show and working hunter ponies, intermediates, show ponies and mountain and moorlands.
