Standing over 17hh the horse was the tallest ever to win the Aintree race.

In 1995 Party Politics finished second to Jenny Pitman-trained Royal Athlete, despite having a tube fitted for breathing problems.

And he was running well before being pulled up during 1993’s “void” national when he was bidding to become the first horse to win the race twice since Red Rum.

Owned by Patricia Thompson, the horse enjoyed a happy 13-year retirement at the Thompson’s Cheveley Park Stud in Newmarket.

    He died of old age.

And Party Politics was an apt name in 1992 — just five days after the horse won the Grand National, John Major won the general election.
