A memorial race is to be held for aspiring Welsh jockey Jamie Yeates at Wales’s new racecourse Ffos Las this summer.
Fifteen-year-old jockey Jamie Yeates died after being stabbed 18 times on 8 January at his home in Llanelli.
His stepfather Carl Wayne Bowen will go on trial at Swansea Crown Court on 6 July accused with Jamie’s murder and the attempted murder of Jamie’s sister Kimberly, 18, and mother, Gwyneth.
The first meeting for Ffos Las is on 18 June and is a jumps card.
But Jamie, who was nicknamed “Spencer” after his hero Flat jockey Jamie Spencer, was a Flat fan — so organisers decided that their first Flat meeting (21 July) would host the tribute race.
The memorial race is worth £7,500. The prize fund has been contributed to by Ffos Las management, Carmarthenshire County Council and trainer Alison Thorpe — whom Jamie used to work for three days a week.
Jamie was studying for his GSCEs at Ysgol y Strade school and was hoping to go to the Northern Racing College in Doncaster this summer.
