Five-year ban for woman convicted to cruelty to pregnant mare

  • A woman from Worcestershire has been banned from keeping horses for five years after being found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to a pregnant mare.

Rose Jay from Newlands was given a 12-week suspended prison sentence and fined £3,150 by Worcester Magistrates Court on Thursday, 1 May.

The court heard how a field officer from World Horse Welfare (formerly ILPH) found the emaciated chestnut mare, in-foal and with a seven-month-old foal at foot, in a Christmas tree plantation with other horses in March 2007. They had no hay or grass.

The court has given Jay until 1 June to find homes for her five other horses.
