IRISH Army show jumper Commandant Gerry Flynn has announced his retirement from international competition to start a new career in coaching management.
Comdt Flynn, 42, had enjoyed plenty of international success as an individual and team competitor. In recent years, his best horse was mo Chroi, who is owned by the Irish Minister for Defence, and partnered him when he won last year’s Royal Dublin grand prix.
Commissioned in 1988, Comdt Flyn had a successful international eventing career between 1993 and 1996. In 1995, his top-level show jumping career began in earnest with international wins coming fast after 1997.
His presence on the Irish competition circuit will be missed.
“Gerry was a valued member of the Irish team, and also distinguished himself in individual competitions throughout the world,” said Horse Sport Ireland chief executive Damian McDonald. “He and Mo Chroi made a major contribution to the Irish campaign to regain its place in the Samsung Super League.”
