Winsome Adante to be honoured in official retirement ceremony

  • American event horse Winsome Adante will be officially retired at the Kentucky three-day event.

British-bred Windsome Adante and his rider, Kim Severson, won the CCI**** Kentucky three-day event three times. The gelding will be honoured in an official retirement ceremony this year.

The ceremony will take place before the show jumping at the event on Sunday 27 April at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.

Winsome Adante is the only horse to have won the Rolex Kentucky three-day event more than once since it became a CCI**** in 1998, and is undefeated at the competition.

The Kentucky three-day event is the only CCI**** event in the United States.

Ridden by Kim Severson and owned by Linda Wachtmeister of Plain Dealing Farm in Scottsville, Virginia, Winsome Adante won the competition in 2002, 2004 and 2005. In 2005 he won by a staggering 17 points and was the only horse to finish on his dressage score.

Bred in Britain by Chris and Janet Gooch, “Dan” or “Danny” as he is affectionately known, has provided much cause for celebration for his connections.

In 2001 he won Blenheim Horse Trials and was also a member of the Gold medal winning team at the World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain in 2002.

In 2004 he won individual silver and team bronze medals in the Olympics in Athens. He competed at WEG 2006 and was third in his first attempt at Badminton Horse Trials in 2007.

After sustaining a suspensory injury in his hind leg last year it was decided that the 15-year-old should retire. Winsome Adante will live out his retirement at Plain Dealing Farm.
