Coed Llandegla Forest opened to riding and carriage driving members of the Coed Llandegla Carriage Driving & Horse Riding Association on 31 March.
The CLCDHRA was formed to give its members access to safe off-road driving and riding in Denbighshire’s Coed Llandegla Forest, which is owned by UPM Tilhill. This is the first time in Wales such a relationship has been formed between a private company and a voluntary association to work together setting up equine facilities in the forest.
Coed Llandegla is well known for its established mountain biking and walking trails, plus an award-winning cafe, and it is hoped it will soon be recognised for its safe off-road equine facilities.
The CLCDHRA Committee has been busy developing and clearing around seven miles of riding trails, which take around two hours to ride. Members can enjoy the tranquility of the forest and beautiful Welsh scenery, along harvesting tracks and forest roads including two canter tracks.
The carriage drive takes around 1 1/2hr to complete its seven-mile loop of forest roads. UPM Tilhill has extended one of the car parks to accommodate horseboxes. Access from the box area is via a Kent Gap (this is a type of stile which can be used by riders and drivers) and in the next six months a corral will be installed in the parking area for members to tack up safely.
