If you’re looking for a lead-rein pony to introduce your tot to riding, take a look at this selection of lead-rein and first ponies for sale on the Horse & Hound website this week.
1. ‘Impeccable manners’
Height: 11.3hh
Gender: gelding
Age: 11
Selling points: “Fergus is the ideal first pony — he has impeccable manners and has given my daughter so much fun and done everything a little rider would want to on him. My daughter has loved her time at Pony Club (PC) on him, partaken in many gymkhanas, rallies, shows, showjumping, dressage, cross-country and beach rides. While at shows and events he behaves, is very relaxed and you can take him anywhere. Fergus loves to hack out, loves to jump and is reliable and safe with a steady trot. Fergus most recently has competed in the NSEA grassroots showjumping team and gone on to become regional reserve champion. Fergus loves attention, is safe to be around and enjoys being groomed. Fergus loads onto trailers and lorries no problem, shoes (front only), clip and dentist. Fergus was ridden by previous owners as a second pony off the lead rein too.”

2. ‘Very pretty’
Height: 12hh
Gender: mare
Age: nine
Selling points: “Lucy is a very pretty pony and typical of her breeding. She is suitable for all Mountain & Moorland classes and has a nice jump so would easily do cradle stakes working hunter classes. She has done local lead-rein classes and is well schooled for the ring. She has also done PC activities and is good in traffic, with the farrier.”

4. ‘Super-fun’
Height: 12.2hh
Gender: gelding
Age: nine
Selling points: “Harry has taken our daughter from a nervous wreck to a confident, capable jockey. He is ultra-reliable in every respect — he turns his hand to anything with a smile on his face. Harry loads, travels on anything, seen big crowds, flags, tannoys, machinery, open spaces and so on and never kicks out, squeals or causes a fuss. He would take any jockey around a 60cm course — he has a lovely rocking horse canter so is ideal for dressage, cross-country, one-day events and has done a lot of mounted games — he is rock solid with equipment, hand overs, vault etc. Harry hacks in any traffic, alone or in company and is safe in the stable for any size child. He has also done working hunter and drives beautifully.”

5. ‘Great little pony’
Height: 13hh
Gender: gelding
Age: five
Selling points: “For the past two years my grandchildren have been riding Prince on the lead-rein but they have now lost interest hence him being for sale. Prince is good to load and with the farrier and so on. He lives in or out and loves a fuss — he will follow you around all day. Prince will be a great little pony on the lead-rein or for a more forward rider to go hacking/PC. Prince will go far in the right hands.”
